When you get on a plane, the first thing you hear before take off is to put your phone on flight mode, but what happens when you don't? Does it really matter that much?

You don't have to fear that the plane will crash if you don't put your phone on flight mode.
If you leave your phone on, the cockpit can still receive communications, but your phone may cause interference. There aren't any serious consequences, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't turn off your phone or put it in flight mode anyway.
Noise Aside from interference, your phone can cause something else that's really annoying for pilots.
Not having your phone on flight mode makes a very annoying sound to pilots and air traffic controllers.
The noise is similar to what you hear when you hold your phone or microphone too close to the speaker so, from now on, just listen to the instructions and put your phone on flight mode.
